Blood Disorder Genetics and Thalassemia Department

Accreditation

The Blood Disorder Genetics and Thalassemia Department has been granted the accreditation CYS EN ISO 15189:2007 on the 15th December 2014 according the International Organization for Standardization by the Cyprus Organization for Promotion of Quality. The department continues to be accredited with ISO15189:2022 since the 20th of October 2025. 

The accreditation ensures competency, quality, safety and accuracy in our services. (Accreditation Certificate no. L061). 

With the aim to ensure and maintain optimal quality in testing and reporting for the benefit of patients the department participates in External Quality Assessment interlaboratory schemes for Haemoglobinopathies, Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, and Non-Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis for fetal sex determination.

Since 2002, it participates in UKNEQAS for haemoglobinopathies and since 2016 in UKNEQAS for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. It also participates in the European Molecular Genetics Quality Network (EMQN) and UKNEQAS scheme for NIPD for fetal sex determination. 

The department also follows  “EMQN Best Practice Guidelines for molecular and haematology methods for carrier identification and prenatal diagnosis of the haemoglobinopathies”.
